My Own Country RoadLOCATION: Mining Road , SmithersYEAR: 1975TAGS: John Denver, Knight, Father, Walk, MinePUBLISHED: March 3, 2008I have always been lucky. My writing talent and the love for it comes from my father’s mother who was a published author. My love of music comes from my parents who always seemed to have music around us. And neither my mother nor father tried to dampen our spirits when we would sing along to songs or just sing one.  The year this event happened is being guessed at because I was anywhere between 8 and 10. I think. I was young. My family was going to a mine outside of Smithers where my father worked. It was a beautiful sunny day and the countryside was gorgeous. I was in fine spirits and started singing John Denver’s ‘Country Roads’.  I had the window open and was singing to the birds and trees. Then the car broke down and we were forced to walk.  Against my father’s advice, I skipped ahead singing. I was enjoying the sun and the fresh air and this was a great adventure. But once father proved to know best and I was soon worn out, my little legs too tired to go on. My father carried me for a little while then, like a knight in shining armor, the mine’s owner John appeared. I remember a truck appearing and our walk was over.  I still love that song and every time I hear it I think of that long walk. Time may have distorted my memory a bit yet that is the way it sticks in my mind.
