I have a brother who is six years older than I and who loves music. Although I rarely let him know, I do admire him and have looked at him as a guide over the years. When I was young I always wanted to know what he was doing because it seemed so exciting.

Both of our parents worked so my brother would come home after school with his friends and keep an eye on my younger brother and I. What he would do was send us to our rooms while he and his friends sat in the living room listening to music and talking.

There was a small set of stairs directly behind the sofa so my younger brother and I got into the habit of hiding on the stairs so we could feel as if we were a part of his thrilling world. These days were my first exposure to rock music and all these years later I can remember certain albums. The Stampeders were one and Sweeney Todd, ‘If Wishes Were Horses’ is another.  I don’t remember much of what was said though so I guess those lessons never took.
