An Inspiration to Us All

Terry Fox was a man that inspired many. He was an athlete who contracted bone cancer and lost part of his right leg to the disease. Many of us would have just given up but not Terry.

In 1980, Terry decided to start the Marathon of Hope. He dipped his artificial leg into the Atlantic Ocean in Newfoundland and then began to run. His goal was to run across Canada and raise a dollar for cancer research from every Canadian. He made it more than halfway before tragedy struck. The cancer had returned and this time it had invaded his lungs. Terry was flown back to British Columbia for treatment. He died about a year later.

Yet Terry more than accomplished his goal. He raised much more than a dollar from every Canadian and to this day there are marathons held in his name to support cancer research. In 2005, on the twenty-five anniversary of his famous journey, the Royal Canadian Mint created a one dollar coin (commonly referred to as a loonie.) with an etching of Terry running on one side.

The Marathon of Hope has inspired many including Rod Stewart, Bernie Taupin and Jim Cregan who wrote this song in honor of Terry.
