Jungle Bus Sing-along

LOCATION: School Bus, Philippines

YEAR: 1997

TAGS: Trisha Yearwood, Con-Air, school bus, sing-along

PUBLISHED: February 12, 2008

My school bus is like an “another world” for me back when I was still a grade-schooler. There, kids from different grade levels come together and force themselves to somehow get along and be able to go home in one piece. It is not easy, I tell you – it is a miniature jungle inside! There were bullies, snobs, noisy brats and other annoying people. There is rarely a moment of peace.

Then one day, while we were stuck inside a very depressing traffic, the bus driver turned on the radio. That time, Trisha Yearwood’s version of “How Do I” is very much popular since the release of the movie “Con-Air.” As the song’s intro played, the whole bus suddenly came into an expectant kind of hush and when the opening lines were played, everybody sang! And when I said everybody, I meant everybody! From those bullies to those snobs, everyone was singing to their heart’s content. I remember vividly this particular bully who was sitting beside me during that time. He was singing with utmost conviction! His eyes were shut tight and he was making dramatic hand gestures and then, he started crying! My eyes popped out when I saw those tears rolling from his eyes.

Well of course, after the song ended, we all came back to the usual routines of our school bus.

Trisha Yearwood’s “How Do I” will always bring me back to that day where everybody shed their pretensions for three minutes and just sang together – almost as if we’re all friends.
