The Neighborhood BarLOCATION: Bar , SacramentoYEAR: 1978TAGS: barPUBLISHED: April 18, 2008We had just moved into the neighborhood, with our 6 year old son and our baby daughter. It was a pretty nice neighborhood too, at least to us. It was our first house. A rental sure, but still a house. Our next door neighbors were even cool. (Something I wished I'd appreciated more at the time) They even had a teenage daughter who could occasionally babysit for us. One Friday evening, my husband and I decided it would be fun to go and check out the "neighborhood bar". With the kids in bed and the babysitter in place, we headed out for a couple of drinks and some music. The bar was quiet and the jukebox ready for my quarters. I loved Kenny Rogers, so I put on this song along with a couple of others. With The Gambler playing in the back ground, we sat down at the bar to order a drink. Within 3 minutes of sitting down, in blew about 15 or 20bikers. I must say, it was a little scary. So much for our quiet little neighbothood bar. We looked around and realized there would be no quick exit for us. So we stayed there at the bar and sipped our drinks trying to decide how to proceed. Well my hubby took matters into his own hands. He jumped up and went to the biggest and baddest looking biker in the joint, ripped off his own shirt and challenged the guy to arm wrestle. Now I have to say, I'd never seen my guy lose at arm wrestling anywhere. He was and is the stongest man I know. The bikers had been eyeing us, like maybe what kind of trouble they could start, so this took them all by surprise. The big guy chuckled and with admiration in his eyes agreed to the challenge. I chuckled as well, knowing hubby had hit on the one thing that could probably get us out of there safely. Becasue I knew he would win. And he did. The big guy said hubby was either crazy or very smart, and either way he liked him. So they took us in and decided we should go with them to their "party". Well all I could think was ugh. Now what?. And hubby was nodding his head and agreeing. Sure sure, we'd love to come. I figured he was crazy not smart. Everyone went outside and hopped on their bikes and hubby said we'd follow in our car. They took off, we took off and started to follow them, as they pulled ahead of us, hubby made a quick U-turn and sped off in the opposite direction. He turn to me and said no biker partys for you missy. I started laughing and knew he was both crazy and smart. Thank God!! We never did go back to that neighborhood bar. But hearing Kenny Roger's The Gambler, always makes me think of that place and that night.
