hurricanesteve | MEMORY FROM 1984

the world ain't all roses and puppies, johnny

LOCATION: neighbors house , Houston

YEAR: 1984

TAGS: kids, neighbors, innocence

PUBLISHED: April 17, 2008

Now we'd come across a kid's father's playboy collection a couple years earlier. We'd even been titillated by scrambled soft-core porn by bypassing a cable box at some kid's house. We'd been trading cracked software and games for our Apple II+ and Apple IIe computers for quite some time. We'd managed to hack into a local Chevy dealership's computer system with our 300 baud Hayes modems.

We were sophisticates. Not hard men, of course, but sophisticates, in a homogenous, suburban, milquetoast way.

One day a kid suggested we come over and listen to a song his much older brother had gotten. There was a story about it being banned, needing to be mail ordered, sent to a PO Box and picked up after hours. Cloak and dagger kind of stuff. Just hearing the song could be grounds for suspending habeus corpus. You'd just be disappeared. Your parents would have to learn to get over it. Oh yes, we wanted to hear this song.

I've since heard the song several times and I think it's interesting as a snapshot of what was going on in metal music at the time. Not great. Not WASP's best. But good. Shock the audience out of their 80's comfort zone.

However, on the day we first heard it. A group of six or seven 12-13 year olds. Stunned silence. With the exception of the kid whose brother had already played it for him. He was hopping around excitedly. Schadenfreude. He'd been deflowered and now we were gonna get it, too.
