Dad's LPs

LOCATION: My bedroom , Houston

YEAR: 1982

TAGS: turntable, LP

PUBLISHED: March 20, 2008

Dad had a great LP collection.  Everything the Beatles ever put out.  And a great pair of Marantz receiver/amps (2215 and 2440) playing through JBL L88's (all of which I restored last year).  It was hi-fi heaven in the 70's.  But I never heard him play the Led Zeppelin album.  I don't know if he didn't like it or just was never in the mood for it.  It was an enigma.  And I was not allowed to choose the music on his system.  Unless it was Hoyt Axton.  Only then.

In 1982, he bought a used Rat-Shack receiver for me, some Pioneer two ways and a Technics turntable.  Now I could choose.  What did I choose first?  Led Freakin Zeppelin.   At first it scared me.  What was this?  Did I like it?  It was forbidden fruit.  And I loved it.  Every track.  But Whole Lotta Love.  So loud it made the needle jump off the track.  Straight up.  Like the first shot of Jack Daniels you ever took.  Burned your throat.  Tickled your nose.  Put hair on your chest.  Made you a man.

RHMF said: Aye aye...indeed, how can you become a man without listening to LZ? How? I remember listening to their Song Remains the Same live album in 1977 as a wee little kid. My Brother bought it for me for Christmas. I think it was my 2nd or 3rd album owned. I know exactly what you mean about it "scaring" such young ears. But I couldn't turn it off. I had to listen to it every time my parents were out and I could use the turntable. Whole Lotta Love is the last track on the album and I thought it was so tough in a swaggering "don't fu*k with me" sultry sort of way. And Dazed and Confused did confuse me, but in a way that was more hypnotic than discomforting. I was hooked and have been since. Thanks for bringing back the memories through your post. (3/28/2008)
