I'll Put My Hand Through the Ceiling for You

If I have to think of one song that defines one of my best friends Deepali, I'd say "Yellow" by Coldplay. She used to be effin' obsessed with it.

If I have to think of one memory that defines Dee, I'd have to say it's definitely the conversation we had whilst laying on the floor of her living room when we were about 12 or 13. We looked up at the ceiling, and used typical 2 A.M. psychology - "You know, if we really wanted to - we could put our hands through the ceiling." "Yeah, I know". If I had to think of one movie that defines that memory, it would be The Matrix. It's our little in joke now, people give us weird looks when we talk about how we could get that bottle out of the fridge without opening the door, y'know, if we actually wanted to.

I made friends with Deepali in year 8 when we were 12 by chasing her around the classroom repeatedly to get her to break down the weird barriers to physical contact that she had up. I stopped chasing her, and she hugged me - which had been what I'd been trying to achieve. From then on she's been pretty much a fully converted hugger, of which me and my friends are particularly proud of.

Deepali likes everything. She likes all music, all art, all movies, all television, and all toys. Particularly that last one. If something is sparkly, she is on it like a magpie. If something is colourful, she is on it like a 2 year old. If something is colourful, sparkly, and flashing with light - you'd better pull her away quick. Her liking of all art almost caused an argument between us the other week - I fucking hate the Tate Modern, yet she finds merit in every piece of crap in that poor excuse for a gallery. It's OK, I let her run through the fountains on the South Bank afterwards, so we got over it. What I'm trying to say is that she could find good in anyone or anything.

She's also a genius. She got some of the highest marks in the country for her GCSEs and she's almost definitely going to Cambridge University. I'm pretty sure she's either going to be Prime Minister or Secretery General of the UN one day, so watch out.
