Weekend GetawayLOCATION: Shopping Center , FloridaYEAR: 1996TAGS: weekend, strangersPUBLISHED: March 4, 2008Certain songs on the radio instantly resonate with me. Key West Intermezzo is one of those songs, and I learned the lyrics as quickly as possible so I could crank up the radio whenever the song came on. One weekend in 1996, I was invited by someone who called my office to go down to a beach town for a weightlifting competition. I was young and fearless, so I agreed and hopped in my car for the 3 hour drive. I even stopped in a Circle K to curl my hair and adjust my makeup before I arrived. The competition was fun. The company was even better. I followed my new friends back to the house they were staying at. There we swam in the pool and watched a really bad science fiction movie. Then we played poker until the wee hours of the morning. As I drove home the next morning, Key West Intermezzo played on the radio several times. I sang along the entire drive down the lonely state road. Since then, this song reminds of the very impulsive decision I made to spend the weekend with three strangers from another state. I drove by that shopping center the other day. It made me smile.
