A Pirate Looks at Forty always brings to my mind the image of a dimly lit Ford truck cabin and even more dimly lit orange groves. I used to hop in a truck and drive through winding roads lined by orange trees for as far as the eyes could see. Orange groves at night are dark and desolate places.

I don't know how many hours I spent driving or how many miles I put on that truck, but the darkness and winding roads seemed to amplify the lyrics. After the song was over, I'd press the rewind button and listen to it all over again.

This was my way of thinking and putting my life into perspective. I wish my memory was more entertaining, but this is the way it is. I hear this song and I see the moon rising over the orange groves and providing what little bit of light there was overhead. I feel the vinyl seat cradle me and the wind blowing through my hair. I know for just a few minutes that I'm not the only lost soul in the world.
