What started out as a night drinking with some friends lead to something I definitely did not expect. A friend was having a goodbye party at a local pub. I was going to make a brief appearance, give my hugs and goodbyes, then be on my way home to prepare myself for a 6th day of work in a row. I found an open spot next to John, a co-worker who I didn’t really know so well but had agreed to work his shift the next day. We started chatting and found out we had a lot in common. We studied the same thing in university. We played the piano. We were science geeks.

The get-together was wrapping up so I decided to start heading home. John stopped me and begged me to go with them to the club next door for an hour. I hesitated at first saying I had to work (and for him nonetheless), but after he gave me the puppy-dog eyes, I caved in.

We danced together in a big group for more than an hour. And after a couple of various cocktails, I completely forgot I had to work the next morning. Slowly, the group splintered off, some going home, some heading off to different dance floors. After a while, it was just me and John. Then, “Sugar Pill” came on. The song’s slow, dream-like beats helped set the tone. He grabbed me and just stared for what felt like forever. I really didn’t know what to do but smile. Then, he started kissing me, and it was good. I had a feeling everyone was looking at us. We were in Japan at the time where public displays of affection were frowned upon. But we both didn’t care. After the song stopped, I looked at him and the only thing I can come up to say was “Is that your way of saying thank you to me for working your shift tomorrow?” He grinned.
