My 1st Integration of LoveLOCATION: Shaker Heights High School, Shaker Heights, OhioYEAR: 1982TAGS: dedicated, biracial, great love, couple, high school, integration, harmonyPUBLISHED: February 7, 2008We made a statement “as the black guy started dancing closer to the white girl”, that first year after junior high let out. We held hands in the hallways between classes, we kissed briefly hello or goodbye, we sat together in the cafeteria, we created quite a stir. My first boyfriend was obviously of a different race and nationality and with our boldness came some very eye-opening discoveries. This song was more or less dedicated to us throughout high school because we clicked so well and made so many people not envious, but happy. We stood against some not so nice people and attitudes of grave disappointment, but we forged and stuck together like the keys on that piano Stevie played better than a man who can see. MB was a very gentle soul that sang his way into my heart, to this day I can sometimes hear him singing sweetly when I need to be uplifted. If “Ebony and Ivory” was on the radio, or over the pa, or on a stereo somewhere in the house--, I knew he was somewhere thinking about us and vice-versa because it was about us. We acted like peanut butter and jelly and most often came in unanimous decided for harmony because we just were so compatible. A smile almost immediately comes to my whole being when I hear this because that first love was never geared for regret and ebony and ivory just is. We are still friends today with separate lives.
