Girls are better than Boys

Our bungalow colony had a great diverse mix of girls and boys and whenever the parents who came up for weekends wanted entertainment, us kids provided. A sports event, a talent show even a 'faux' boxing match was an incredible way to keep the regular competition between genders, interesting.

One particular weekend, a Saturday morning comes to mind whenever I hear this song. The volleyball net had been fixed and re-stitched at the weak spots and a new ball was bought by all of us youth pitching in a few cents. Prices of stuff was not as high as today so all twelve youths, six girls and six boys, had enough money to make a volleyball match happen.

We had some refreshments for the adults and set chairs all around the field for the parental spectators and so-called 'coaches' and families.There were even some barbecue grills lit and ready.A myriad of delicacies likehotdogs, burgers, rib-eyes, tenderloins, pork chops, ribs, chicken and even piroshki (a potato-filled or cheese-filled dumpling thing that waswrapped in foil and placed directly on the coals to melt the yumminess within) were at our fingertips when coach yelled 'game over !'

There was a table with condiments like mustard, ketchup,mayonaisse on ice and plates of sliced tomatoes, onions, pickles, lettuce,cheeses such as swiss, american, cheddar and even some bowls of pickled herring, fried smelts, horseradish, barbecue sauce, tobasco and hot red pepper sauce ! In addition there was always someone who made up salads like pasta, cucumber and dill, three-bean or regular lettuce and tomatoes. There was also plenty of alcohol because of most of the fathers who came in for the weekend, worked hard during the week and had Russian-blood running through their veins which liked to be watered down with the finest Vodka and Scotches money could buy.

All of that stuff was always sitting on ice in huge coolers because back then when global warming was a welcomed issue, daytime temperatures reached near 90 all day long, well at least till the sun set. So amny bags of ice stayed in a nearby bungalow out of the sun to keep stuff 'edible and drinable'. Today was no different but a game is a game and the volleyball match was about to begin. All week we were practicing and getting better and better at what should be a sport easy for both genders to get good at. But something with the full moon last nightmade the younger guys on our team just play terribly.

One guy really liked Twisted Sister as his mom was friends with Dee Snyder (lead singer of TS) and constantly playing this album and the other "stay Hungry" (I think thats the other album). He was a few years older than the regular kids who lived there during the summer and he was just a guest for two weekends, but if we would of had him on our team the guys may have won. But they didn't ! In this case the girls were better than the guys ! And we laughed all the way to the end.

The girls beat the guys fair and square which deserved this song to be played as loud as possible. See, the guys were sore losers that day and did not appreciate being 'beaten' by six really good volley-ball playing young ladies, so they decided to stand in a line, turn this song on from the beginning and shout in both Russian and English how they were not going to take being beat ! Thats when the hoses came on and the water guns and pails of water sitting around the spectators ended up all over them ! Laughing instead of being angry, they said "ah got you girls to keep off the heat, yes we are still better than girls . . . yeah at tricking us into feeling terribly for winning and then making the losers as cool as a winters day !

What a way to get wet without swimming in the lake a short distance from the colony ! Oh you guys!
