Duet Audition = Third Time is a Charmer

LOCATION: Next door neighbors garage-studio, Mantua, Ohio

It was cooling down after a long hot day doing gardening, washing the cars, cleaning the house. Later around dusk, the five of us plugged in our microphones, guitars, keyboards, amplifiers and were ready to jam when my lead guitarist decided him and I needed to rehearse a duet for next weeks taping. We chose an easier song for me to hit the mid notes on and him to hit one or two high notes. “Close My Eyes Forever” gave enough of both of us to determine if our new band would make it.

We started out good and kept it going without adding backing music for us to dub ourselves into, it was just J and me. Our keyboardist was not always sure when to come in or how long in reverb to stay, but we figured it out. By the third and final take, ‘the charmer’ we had quite an audience from the neighborhood. The amplifier bellowed and the bass guitar popped a string just before the song ended but we managed to play it out without too much laughter and comedic interference.

It is a very slow ballad in which the implication of sleeping completely through life and never waking up, is a reality for some. How many times the five of us used to sit around and relate to how music made us feel. This song made me and my band members realize you can’t walk through life with your eyes, your mind or your heart closed no matter how hard you try.

David said: Lita Ford was cool because she penetrated the boy's club of hard rock. But Poison seemed more feminine than her, ironically. Close My Eyes Forever was a pretty good tune... (2/7/2008)
