The Most Beautiful Concert EverLOCATION: Riverside Church, New YorkYEAR: 2001TAGS: New York, Riverside Church, Bjork, September 11PUBLISHED: February 5, 2008Okay, I am a bit biased when it comes to Bjork, she is a singular artist with an other worldly, magical voice [big fan]. I was fortunate enough to get tickets to this secret performance she was giving at Riverside Church, accompanied by Matmos. It was a bitter, cold, dank, NYC evening. I went with some good friends of mine, everyone was buzzing with anticipation, not knowing what to expect from Bjork performing at such a unique venue. We all crammed into this small church on the west side of Manhattan, there weren't any special set ups, just a mass of audio gear and wires, the audience sat in the pews or stood along the walls. Bjork entered the church, singing acapella as she strolled slowly down the center aisle, with the occasional click and pops from Matmos. Her voice rose to fill the entire church and flowed back down as if washing the grime of the city from your body. Among the set list was an amazing rendition of All Is Full Of Love, Pagan Poetry and a preview of the song Generous Palm-strokes. The entire audience stood awestruck, in silent reverence to this incredible performance. A few days later the horrible events on September 11th happened; one of my friends who moved back to Japan after that day, who also attended the performance said it the best, "the memory of Bjork's performance etched such a beautiful picture in my mind, the final image of NYC doesn't have to be tragic". Here is a prime example of the power of music, for those who couldn't make it to the performance here is a clip that was recorded for HBO.
