I had just returned from my "lost year" in London and started a job with an investment bank, rocking power suits, being driven around in blacks cars and blowing money like it was umm ... 1989. From my time over the pond I was hooked on to Brit Rock, Ska and some really great alternative music from Radio One's Friday night and Saturday broadcasts.

Anyway, I was visiting a high school buddy in L.A. who got an large gig, with a Hollywood studio and a matching ego. This was my first trip to L.A., everything was bold, plastic and acid ... it didn't seem like subtle existed in its vocabulary. Arriving at night, we drove through Hollywood, Venice and Santa Monica with the top down and Jane's Addiction Trip Away blasting on the CD player. There was something electric in the music, it just screamed L.A. - all that is good and bad about it. The whole album is narcissistic, full of abandon ... what a great album! Next time you drive through Hollywood blvd. or La Cienaga, pop in Jane's Addiction you'll see what I mean.

Going down that highway, everything was ahead of us. A few years later I couldn't wait to put it all behind.
