London's BurningLOCATION: Camden Town , LondonYEAR: 2007TAGS: London, Burning, Camden Town, SamosaPUBLISHED: February 19, 2008I started to feel a bit wistful when I heard about the fires in Camden Market. It was there where I got to buy cassettes of some of the best bootleg music ever (that was before I discovered Shinjuku, the mother of all bootleg markets), unreleased recordings, b-sides, live performances, all the stuff "the man" didn't want you to buy. Twenty years ago, as a young furniture apprentice, I made about 150 quid a week, half of which went to food and rent and the rest either went to my nightly pub stops or to Camden Town's most excellent street vendors. There's the tourist element to Camden Town, but deep down, at its heart was music and alternative culture. Of course you could go to the big commercial retailers at Oxford Street but that couldn't compare with a weekend afternoon spent with the mohawks, torn leather jackets and the sweet smell of incense and ganja, not to mention the samosa street vendors. Here is one of the few times I agree with Prince Charles and his crusade against modern architecture in London. I hope in the reconstruction they don't replace the turn-of-the-century gypsy character of Camden Town with the shiny steel and glass monstrosities called urban gentrification. London calling to the underworld Come out of the cupboards, you boys and girls    Â
