Little Bit Of CountryLOCATION: Queens, New YorkYEAR: 1986TAGS: freaks and geeks, high school, country, WLIRPUBLISHED: February 6, 2008I occasionally go on some wonky musical tangents, this was one of them. When I was 16, in my senior year of high school we all listened to WLIR the best alternative radio station in NY, located out in the boonies of Long Island. All the kiddies listened to The Cure, Scritti Politti, Depeche Mode, Psychedelic Furs, The Smiths ... really great stuff. Of course going to art school helped us express our fashion sense without fear (or taste), with colored hair spiked up as tall as possible, wearing oh-so-baggy clothes and black so dark that they actually absorbed black holes. Some how I came in possession of this album, to this day I don't know how (for a new wave chinese kid listening to country was a bit odd at the time). But, it is a fantastic album, in particular the song Southern Accents with its haunting melody and melancholic vocals by Tom Petty. I guess it appealed to my teenage angst at the time (although, I did partake of the wacky weed a lot in High School, perhaps there were other influences). In public I would be rocking out to The Smiths on my Sony Walkman, orange headphones and blue hair; later at home I would put on the 12" vinyl of Southern Accents and trip away. Besides, if Johnny Cash can cover that song its go to be cool, that and Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics co-wrote some songs on the album.
