Support through a rough patch

LOCATION: Six Pockets , western NY

YEAR: 2003

TAGS: loss

PUBLISHED: February 18, 2008

There were a lot of ups and downs in the fall of 2003.  I miscarried a baby, but I also married the man who had been my best friend and closest companion for 2 1/2 years.  Through both events, I was surrounded by my friends.  The night of my birthday, squarely between these two life-changing events, was no exception.

The pool hall wasn't very crowded as far as I recall - just as well, since we'd barely managed to drag my friend M along for this because it's not usually the kind of thing she likes to do.  But she was there, along with my then-fiance
and two others of our friends.

I don't remember who was winning, or even whose turn it was.  I barely even remember the song beginning, but it did and it registered with me right away.  I met my fiance's eyes and began to cry, remembering the loss we'd been through just a month prior.  Before I knew it, I was in the middle of a group hug.

What could have been a hearbreaking memory was transformed in seconds to a heartwarming one instead.  When I hear this song, I can remember the support and love from my friends instead of focussing on the baby I lost.
