Okay, it's August 1st 1981, I am a 10-Years old and already a music junkie and I find out that we are about to get MTV.   I am losing my mind for weeks waiting for it.  The commercials with Billy Idol made me hyper and my Mom would laugh at me.  She was happy for me.

Finally, I get home from wherever and there it is on my TV screen.  My mother wasn't known for ability to tolerate filth or smut and if you've seen this video before then you know where this is going.  Whip It had come out in 1980 and was already a smash hit.  My friends and I sang it on the bus.

I'm freaking OUT excited singing and clapping, so she walks in the room and there's this guy whipping the ladies clothes off and these drunken rednecks are cheering him on. The cross-eyed lady's bugging out and the next thing I know the screen goes black.    That was it for MTV.  First Day.  First Video.  Gone.  Last Video.  I was banned from watching it because I had "two younger brothers who would not be exposed to such disgusting behavior!"

I would frown around for weeks after randomly yelling out those famous four words...I WANT MY MTV!

It is probably the single biggest reason why I'm a DJ today.   It made me search for music outside the usual avenues.   I began playing at OTHER people's houses alot more after that.  Started working at a record store in 9th grade and was named the manager before I graduated HS.   Spinning records on weekends in bars while still in High School was the best!  Happy happy place.
