Dumb 16-year-old kid, a long way from home for the first time in his life, goes to a summer camp in North Carolina just to escape the stultifying horror of his boring life. Ungodly humid summer night, the woods chattering with cicadas, fireflies in the dark. After three weeks of ugly sweaty work, he finds a beer, sitting on wooden steps overlooking the ocean. She walks up, wearing cut-off jean shorts and sits down next to him, waiting for someone who never came. "Wonderful Tonight" playing from inside. After a little awkward chat, he looks at her brazenly. It takes her a few seconds to connect his gaze with the song playing. She smiles and looks away, her face hidden by a sweep of hair. The girl asks for a swig of beer. He passes the bottle to her. She takes a swallow, then places the bottle against her forehead, and then runs it along her bare thigh, glistening in the blue glow of the streetlight. She hands him the beer and smiles. It's the night he meets his first girlfriend and he can't ever hear "Wonderful Tonight" without an intensity of nostalgia that blinds him with bittersweetness.
