Batter UpLOCATION: Softball field at Asbury College , Wilmore, KYYEAR: 2003TAGS: softball, piano, college, coldplayPUBLISHED: July 9, 2008My first real exposure to Coldplay occurred on brisk autumn nights in September of 2003, when I'd play intramural softball with the guys on my dorm hall. Some guys had thrown together a CD of songs to play when each guy was up to bat. My song was "Man of Constant Sorrow" by The Soggy Bottom Boys from--you guessed it--the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack. My best friend, also named Dan, chose "Clocks". When I first actually listened to the song, of course the opening piano solo was the hook. Can't say the rest of the song really made an impact on me, though. Chris Martin's vocals were (and still are) a little too nasally for me, though more bearable now (thank you, Viva la Vida!) I still enjoy the piano solo, though, because it nearly always sounds cool and it always takes me back to all those college softball games. I can picture being in the dugout, tasting those soggy and salty sunflower seed husks, seeing all these white boys with do-rags and orange jerseys on, and there's this kid up at bat who looks like Screech. It evokes a feeling of anticipation, waiting for Dan to do something cool and rock it for the home team. It usually also reminds me that I need to give the dude a call, too.
