Neil Young Is GodLOCATION: Dorm, New York CityYEAR: 1992TAGS: College, Neil YoungPUBLISHED: December 7, 2007At NYU, in the ratty dorm building I actually chose to live in year after year, there was a common area in the lobby with an old TV hooked up to cable. It was in this space that I learned the news that Kurt decided it was better to burn than fade away.
But before that time, I was walking by the TV to get a drink from the vending machines when the sounds of Neil Young hit my ears. There was a random girl sitting on the couch opposite the TV and MTV was on playing a Neil Young video from the Harvest Moon album. Okay, take a second to digest that concept. Breath in. Wow. So the video is playing, I'm totally engaged in watching "From Hank to Hendrix", just a beautiful piece of music, when the girl says "Man, I hate Neil Young". Time & space stopped for me. "HOW CAN YOU NOT GET THIS?! ARE YOU A ROBOT FROM FRANCE?" It goes without saying that whenever I saw this person in the time that followed I would tense up. To prove how small this world is, I actually saw this person quite frequently at shows around NYC after college. I mean, literally once a week. It seemed that we both ended up in this music industry and checked out the same things. I even saw her the two times I attended SXSW in Austin. There?"s a part of me which of course wants to walk up to her all Clint Eastwood-like and say, "Hey punk... how could you say that about Neil?" and thwack her in the head. If you know me, that would be a fairly strange sight. But honestly, I hope she dies alone.
