A nod of the hatLOCATION: Newark Airport, Newark, NJYEAR: 1996TAGS: R.E.M., Michael Stipe, Newark AirportPUBLISHED: January 4, 2008I remember waiting in lovely, sweet-smelling Newark Aiport for an old girlfriend to arrive and spend a weekend with me in NYC. I was there, probably in my crusty U2 hat, waiting around and killing time by reading a music magazine.
At one point, I looked up to see Peter Buck... then Mike Mills... and finally Michael Stipe, who looked at me and my hat and gave me a smile and walked on. I can only assume they were making the promotional rounds for their new record at the time, New Adventures In Hi-Fi, which I think to most is largely forgettable, but I think there were some great tracks on that album, such as E-Bow The Letter, an inspired song with Patti Smith on backing vocals, one of my heroes. Pick up the record and take an adventure, whether in Hi-Fi or 128kbs... sigh.
