Play that funky music white boyLOCATION: School , Atlanta, Ga.YEAR: 1983TAGS: Run-DMC, Hip-HopPUBLISHED: February 25, 2008I have been passionate about music for as long as I can remember. I grew up in Southwest Atlanta and went to a very conservative private school. In 5th grade we had a project of picking a song and writing down the lyrics to read to the class. I honestly cant remember what song I picked and most of the songs were very vanilla and boring. There was a new kid in our class named Spike (no Im not kidding) and he picked the song Rock Box. At that time my exposure to rock music had been groups like Zeppelin, Queen and what is now deemed "Classic Rock" but this was WAY different. The song not only had a great guitar riff, but the guys weren't singing. They were talking and rhyming and my head almost exploded! This was the best thing ever! I couldnt decide if the music or the rhymes were the thing I liked the most. The other thing that was great is that Spike had to read the lyrics so I could actually understand what the song said. My musical vision had been shifted forever to include this new form of music. Since I was an inner city kid, my friends were exposed to rap as well but I was the white kid from the private school so I was kind of an outsider but this definitely was something we could all identify with and I loved it! I pasted the video below if you care to enduldge.
