Narrow Minds OpenedLOCATION: Parents Lake House , AtlantaYEAR: 1988TAGS: beatles, within you, SGT PeppersPUBLISHED: February 25, 2008My parents were always big Beatle fans and I could never figure out why. I understood Elvis and even some of the country stuff but what I had heard of the Beatles sounded like bad british bubble gum pop. I had some friends that liked them and I respected their opinion so I need an explanation. The explanation was simple. A friend of mine explained it like this, from 62-66 the Beatles were a pop band and I had heard all that stuff. From 66 forward their music bcame a little more "colorful." Some of my friends and I were going on a weekend trip to my folks lake house. He told me he was going to show me why I needed to appreciate the Beatles that weekend. I was game so I told him I was up for it. When we got to the house, we had brought some party favors that most high school kids have when they are alone for the weekend. He brought the Sgt. Pepper and Yellow Submarine tapes, as well as the Yellow SUbmarine VHS movie. We were both musicians so we were both versed on how much it takes to record a song. These songs were nothing short of works of art. One song on Sgt. Peppers is within you without you and it has a ton of sitar work and its very "indian" sounding but its very cool. We listened to those tapes and watched the movie a couple times and my mind was totally changed about the Beatles post 1966. I still dont care for the early stuff. Give a listen  Â
