mrdamian1976 | MEMORY FROM 1981

Fifth Birthday Party

LOCATION: Home , Telford

YEAR: 1981

TAGS: Birthday, Party, Motown, Funk

PUBLISHED: February 14, 2008

Somewhere in my cluttered, disorganised and rather dark and dank flat is an old VHS tape with about 20 minutes of hot action from my fifth birthday party.

I can barely remember yesterday, nevermind two and half decades ago, so my only memories of the party are from watching the video.

As you'd expect, there's great haircuts (or not as the case may be), dodgy carpets and decor and lots of friendships which haven't stood the test of time.

Interestingly however, the musical accompaniment has.

At the time I remember how we mocked my Mother's choice of music for musical bumps and some weird game involving a chair, some string and a piece of cardboard (don't ask!).

But now, I realise she was some sort of musical goddess. Instead of dancing to new wave, The Clash or whatever else was cool, we were doing our stuff to the sounds of Donna Summer, Lipps Inc or Sly and the Family Stone.

It wasn't a Motown Disco/Funk themed party, that was just my Mum's taste, and so that's what we were having whether we liked it or not.

I pilfered the vinyl she played at the party years ago. It still works, and it still sounds great.

As Cynthia said, if you don't like it, well; 'All the squares go home!'

I have to invent a soundtrack to my (silent) home movies; I usually think of that sort of ragtime type music in standard silent films, because that's only proper. Could be worse, could be like a Bob Sagat "America's Funniest Home Videos" voiceover schtick. I'll take Sly & the Family Stone! (2/15/2008)
