Best not quit the day jobLOCATION: Dan's House, CardiffYEAR: 2006TAGS: Cat stranglingPUBLISHED: February 14, 2008I've only ever done karaoke once. That was enough. For everyone. Sadly it wasn't in a karaoke booth in Toyko with Scarlett Johansson (I wish) but at a friends birthday party in Cardiff – the capital of what Cilla Black refers to as ‘Welsh Wales’ (as opposed to the other Wales). I was a reticent signer, because, well, er, I can’t sing. I gather that’s the point. I still don’t quite get that – can you name another recreation where the aim is to be as bad at it as possible? Nope. Me neither. However, a few beers, spirits and glasses of wine, and you couldn’t keep me away. The clever little computer programme we were using (rigged up through the TV) told you at the end of each song just how many notes you got right. Not many in my case. My moment of glory – something like 40% accuracy – was this pop classic from the Sugababes. So move over Keisha Buchanan, Heidi Range, Amelle Berrabah or whoever is in your group this week, we all know that MrDamian don't need no man, got my kicks for free. [On a boring muso note, this is one of those rare songs that starts with the chorus, can you think of any others?]
