The Guess Who

LOCATION: Racine Festival Park, Racine, WI

YEAR: 1991

TAGS: festival, summer

PUBLISHED: February 12, 2008

The Guess Who was a group I had no thoughts on. I guess I only knew them from "American Woman," but not much else. So when I had the chance to see them
at our Racine Festival Park one summer in 1991, I thought nothing really about it. I wanted to go, but for the experience of going to the festival, which the draw is usually seeing
friends and strangers and enjoying festival foods like meatball bombers and footlong hotdogs and dirnking mass quantities of beer and soda(for I was underage at the time).
Once settling into our festival "spirits," my family and I found a spot to sit and listen to the music, something we have enjoyed doing as a family for many years, to sit
and listen to a decent sounding band. Usually these bands were local and they did half-way decent covers of "real" bands and usually everyone had  a nice time.

This year was different, though. Someone in the planning stages thought it would be a good opportunity to start inviting bigger names to our world-class facilities.
One year, Sheena Easton came to entertain us. Another year, soap star and musician, Michael Damien had "Rocked On." Then the Fabulaous Thunderbirds came only to be rained out.
Who were the guests going to be this year?
It just so happened to be the actual Guess Who, that's who! Like I said, I didn't know much about them, but from the moment they came onstage, they
ROCKED and they ROCKED HARD!

"American Woman" was hit out of the park and sounded exactly like the album version.
"Come Undun," These Eyes," "Share the Land" and all their hits oozed and penetrated the crowd with fever and excitement.

While Randy Bachman was a little gray and wore a hat to cover his thinning head, his voice was as if it had been molded in clear gold.

Morpheus said: Great post! I really love the band Guess Who, although not like you i didn't get to see them perform, but reading from your posts helps bring back time. I had just wish i was there right in the venue where all great bands of yesterday played. You have a nice memory of those good ol' past thanks for sharing it. (2/12/2008)
