I was well into the Violent Femmes' first album, I had seen them in concert, and I was ready to take the next step: Buying another album. When you start to discover a band a decade after they had first hit the scene, it's difficult to make a choiceof what album to buy next. You could go chronological, such as the next album, the sophomore effort-or you could hit the latest effort, and compare how their sound has altered over the past 10 or so years.

So I blindly did that. I simply chose to buy an album of the Violent Femmes that was not the follow-up to Blister in the Sun, but instead the most recent album at the time, Why Do Birds Sing?(1993)

I was not disappointed. I found I liked how the band seemed to have matured with their harmonies, such as in "Out the Window"which has a more melodic quality than simple high/low registered harmonies(not that there's anything wrong with the simple, I love simple)but when a band that has proven themselves time and time again on the simple,to see them go past their supposed reach as artists, is admirable. "American Music" is a stompfest, with hints of the Beach Boys near the song's endingcrescendo. "He Likes Me" gender bends and then bends back again. Laughter from a broken take has Gordon Gano's voice echoing and yes, his voice really sounds that way when he simply speaks! It all shows that this band, the Femmes, are Americana and areall about having a good time, as well as delivering music that they enjoy playing as much as we enjoy them.
