Crickman | MEMORY FROM 1996

R.E.M. to the Rescue!

LOCATION: Summerfest, Milwaukee, WI

YEAR: 1996

TAGS: concert, Summer

PUBLISHED: February 1, 2008

I had gone to Milwaukee for a concert by REM, the first major concert I had ever been to. I was with my old roommate(and band member/best friend) Nick, his girlfriend, Holly, and two other friends, Jeremy and Becky. We ate at the John Hawkes Pub on the Milwaukee River before the show and were hyped to say the least, acting silly and ordering in funny voices(“I’d like a chicken sammich with mannase,” Becky said). We were seeing REM!

REM was one of my favorite bands, and Monster had just come out. My favorite song was the Courtney love inspired, “My Crush With Eyeliner.” Michael Stipe singing “I am smitten, I 'm the real thing,” reminded me of a few girls I liked at the time and how I had over thought my every move in order to not feel stupid. REM captured that feeling simply and wonderfully. They played all their hits and some new ones that at the time weren’t even released yet.

The band was with drummer, Bill Berry still, before his life-altering brain aneurism and leaving the group. So we were lucky to have seen the original lineup, probably for the last time in their history.

David said: Monster was a difficult for both fans and the band from what I've read, but I have to say it's one of my favorite records. It's just very bold with songs which aren't very subtle... from a very subtle band. (2/6/2008)
