Crickman | MEMORY FROM 1988

Relax!

LOCATION: high school , Racine

YEAR: 1988

PUBLISHED: April 15, 2008

I loved the song "Relax" by Frankie Goes to HollyWood. It was fast, somewhat rique sounding, lots of bass, synthesizers and beats and an awesome front man to make it all worthwhile
listening to.

I had no real insight into the song itself and its meanings, so therefore, as this is a memory, I'll only tell you what my 12 year old brain was thinking-that it was about
telling we teenagers(or me, almost a teen) to NOT do it. Don't have sex. It was a noble concept, teaching abstinence. I'll just let you do your own research for the real,
true meaning of the song.

I do remember going to a high school basketball game at a Catholic high school which I was hoping to attend( I wasn't in high school yet , but I went anyways to cheer on not just the team, but the cheerleaders.
Actually, that was my sole reason for me going to high school basketball games-the cheerleaders.) And the cheerleaders did a routine to "Relax." Think black and white cheerleading
uniforms, and white gloves. To me it was just hot! I can't recall the actual routine, but it had something to do with the girls kneeling on the floor, their pom-pons beside them, and they
would start to move and come alive with the song's climbing beat. I think they might have even worn black sunglasses. It was all too cool for me. I ended up going to
a public high school, which I will always have fond memories of attending, but I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for those Catholic cheerleaders who managed to
wriggle and dance and get me excited about someday going to high school where all things were not about books and getting good grades.
