John Kay and SteppenwolfLOCATION: Riverside Park, Oshkosh, WI, Oshkosh, WIYEAR: 1999TAGS: friends, concert, summerPUBLISHED: February 1, 2008
I went with some friends to see John Kay and Steppenwolf play at Oshkosh’s Riverside Park. Of course, I had to work early the next morning, and I wasn’t sure how long I could stay, but my friends, Melanie and Sheri begged me on to stay and listen until the show was done.
I wasn’t too knowledgeable about Steppenwolf’s songs, just “Magic Carpet Ride” and “Born to Be Wild.” As we watched and waited for the hits, they kept playing really good stuff!
“That was their song?” we kept saying. They even played songs from other bands of the era, including the Beatles, doing a decent version of “Revolution.”
And then they played “Magic Carpet Ride,” I thought this little strip of land we stood on before the river was going to fall in! They rocked! And then “Born to Be Wild” rocked. They still had it, and rocked the crowd, all ages, young and old, motorcycle maidens and masters, leather and lace, to yuppied uppercrusts and college co-eds, as well as many children running around to the awesome music of Steppenwolf.
