Goody Two Shoes

Adam Ant had long been gone from the charts when I first got real exposure to Goody Two Shoes. It was the late1990's and the swing era was having a revival. There were several bands out there doing their own version of what they called swing. There was the Brian Setzer Orchestra,The Cherry Poppin Daddies, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and many more. But in one place where I always felt comfortable jumping onto the dance floor, they played not any of the new swing, but a 1980's classic from Adam Ant. The tune? Goody Two Shoes and the venue where I shook my booty occasionally was called Molly McGuire's, or Molly's for short.

Molly's was a text-book meat market bar. Some nights, such as Thursday through Saturday, you could hardly get through the doors,it was so crowded. Guys and gals from all walks came for Ladies Night(Wednesdays), Quarter Tapper Night(Mondays) and then the weekends were divided into musical nights. Thursdays they played rap; Fridays, dance or house; Saturdays they had requests, and Sundays, well that was  Alternative Night. The drink special of the night was just as wonderful-two for one night. I always got two Rolling Rocks, one for now, another was put on ice for later.

The music was what drew my friends and me to Molly's every Sunday. Duran Duran's The Chauffer was a hit(while a buried track on Rio), Nine Inch Nails' Closer was played every week, The Folk Implosion's Natural One made an appearance. Smashing Pumpkins Bullet with the Butterfly Wings was also big. Sometimes for laughs the DJ would play The Chicken Dance. And then one of my faves-Goody Two Shoes.

Beefy Horns, a steady beat, strong and bright acoustic guitar-Goody Two Shoes had the making of a swing hit a decade or more before the new swing sounds were floating across the airwaves. Adam Ant tells us about the Goody Two Shoes(who is probably someone we've all known at one time or another)

It questioned those Goody Two Shoes people who seem to have it all buttoned up and are so self-righteous that others wonder if there isn't something under that thick, opaque skin of theirs. Is there a crazy, sexy girl under there?Is there a wild man on the dance floor out there? How do we know? The way to find out is to do just what Adam Ant did, he sang to her, Little Miss Goody Two Shoes. And she came out of her shell.

Years later, Adam Ant came out with a new song called Wonderful, while not as successful as Goody Two Shoes, it brought back memories of his brighter days, and I was intent on hearing his new work and give him a chance. Everyone should be given a chance, and maybe two, if they deserve it, even the Goody Two Shoes in your life.
