Girls on the BeachLOCATION: Racine's North Beach, Racine, WIYEAR: 1989TAGS: girls, driving, beach, summerPUBLISHED: February 12, 2008
Every Summer I would try to make it to the beach several times, either with friends, a sibling or even by myself. With Lake Michigan only a mile away, and the beautiful white beach(recently named one of the cleanest beaches to visit in the Midwest), was something of a treat to go and just hang out and people watch.
Sometimes I would go by myself, having newly acquired my driver’s license, and go down by the beach to find a good spot. It would be a spot to see the “action.” I’d then throw down my tee-shirt, unload my pockets, get rid of my shoes and jump in with my shorts on. It was an “independent teenager” thing for me.
I would drive our baby blue colored 1985 Grand Marquis, with a stereo tape player of course( there were no CD players installed in cars yet, folks), and crank the Beach Boys surfing songs, “Surfin USA,” “Californina Girls” “Surfer Girl,” “Surfin,” and especially one of my favorites, “Girls on the Beach.”
“The girls on the beach/are all within reach/ if you know what to do”
Brian Wilson’s lead vocals, as well as the rest of the group, harmonizing in sync, gorgeously painted the picture in my head of the beautiful girls in bikinis which I would likely see at the beach once I got down there.
“The sun in her hair/the warmth of the air/on a summer day,” the Beach Boys would sing. It all made sense. Seeing girls on the beach was my form of heaven.
