First Live ConcertLOCATION: Noah's Ark Waterpark, Wisconsin Dells, WIYEAR: 1989TAGS: Summer, concertPUBLISHED: February 1, 2008My father had always been a Beach Boys and Jan and Dean Fan. He told of the days when the two artists would have the different versions of the same songs(such as Little Deuce Coupe, Barbara Ann, or The Little Old Lady From Pasadena). He said that sometimes you couldn’t even tell who the artist was on the radio, but that they each sounded great.
Cue us up to Summer 1989, August. My folks had taken the family to TheWisconsin Dells, for a weekend getaway. Dad didn’t even make a reservation, but we managed to find a motel room for 2 nights. We were excited to go to Noah’s Ark, the world’s largest waterpark. That was the place for us to be. My dad wanted to go because he heard Jan and Dean were playing there.
“Jan and Dean? Who are they?” I asked.
And dad played “Dead Man’s Curve” and told me the story of how Jan Berry was in a similar accident, almost dying and had severe brain damage, but was doing better and actually getting back on stage again after many years of recuperation.
We played and swam at the waterpark until the concert, then we all watched in awe as these two cool guys, Jan and Dean, took the stage. I gave them a big thumbs up as they played “Surf City,” telling us about “two girls for every guy.” Dean smiled and played on. Jan smiled and waved(he wasn’t playing an instrument, but still sung beautifully, hitting the high notes as if it were 1963 all over again.). I was honored to have seen them, even at such a young age.
