The First One

Gym can be an annoying class to take at any age level.  Luckily for me I had the chance to opt out by taking JROTC, probably to my Colonel’s dismay.  It turned out that I was incredibly good at what I did in JROTC.  The problem was getting me to follow military-like instructions in the setting of a high school.  So to my Colonel, I was the cadet who could be great, but refused to. 

My first girlfriend was the complete opposite.  She headed up the Raider team (the Colonel’s pet project), and followed all instructions the second they were given to her.  Leave it to me to date the teacher’s pet. 

The Colonel was completely in the dark about me and his super cadet, which was how we wanted it.  That year I got a copy of Everything You Want from one place or another, and having thought I had found my first love, the song Miracle brought her to my mind every time I heard it.  The fun part is what happened during our first kiss.  We stopped about 100 feet from the door to the class, and I leaned over and planted one on her.  It was the most magical time in my life, up until that point at least. 

The next second I heard a loud voice, about 100 feet away, scream her last name.  I turned around to see the Colonel (looking slightly perturbed) motioning for her to get over there.  Later, I would laugh at the thought of how surprised the Colonel must’ve been, but for the moments after that first kiss, all I could hear was Miracle playing over and over again in my head.
