Pump It Up

School dances are always an excuse to go out and have fun with your friends, even when youre so young that its your parents that are driving you there. We started having school dances in elementary school, and it was the most fun any of us really had during the week. I have a memory of one of these school dances, I guess youd call it a flashbulb memory, where me and all my friends were standing around pumping our fists into the air trying to get others to get as pumped up as we were.

The song that had us so excited, and the only song I can remember from any elementary school dance, was Whoop There It Is. Im not sure if the song was a huge success at the time, but everyone at the school dance loved it. I cannot even remember knowing how to dance, of course I still cant dance, but I dont seem to remember anyone else knowing how to dance either. We were just out having fun.

Elementary school dances were only about fun. We didnt need dates to go to them, and if we didnt have a date, we werent embarrassed. The dances were just a great way to convince your parents to drive you somewhere that you could hang out with your school friends without having to worry about getting homework. Even though I can only really remember a few parts of a few of the dances, I can remember they were fun just from the night we were bouncing around to Whoop There It Is. That song will always be a reminder of a time when school and school dances werent just a popularity contest.
