A Little Worm on a Big HookLOCATION: Hephzibah High School, Hephzibah, GAYEAR: 1999TAGS: Freshman, high school, The Verve PipePUBLISHED: February 7, 2008High school is a defining time in most people’s lives. It’s the time when one starts to learn what the big world is all about. The most intense time in high school for many people is their freshmen year; I know it was for me. One day you walk out of a middle school as one of the oldest people in the school, and you wake up a summer later as the low man on the totem poll. High school is the closest that one comes to seeing the real world before they’re actually thrust into it. The first day of high school, for me anyway, had all types of mixed feelings that I had never felt before. I felt as if I was actually growing up, even though there was kids 3 years my senior walking next to me in the hallway. For once, you’re not told which classes to go to. Sure, you have to go to classes, but you get the undying satisfaction of some sort of freedom by being able to choose which classes you actually wanted to take. It seems to have become a staple of students entering high school after 1996, but The Freshmen takes me back to that first day of high school. The nervousness, excitement, fear, and satisfaction of stepping up with the big dogs, all rolled into one song. The song even serves as a prediction of a freshmen’s future. No matter how much you think you know on your first day as a freshmen, the fear of how little you actually know still grips you as you’re walking away with your diploma.
