The PromLOCATION: SHS , Solon, OhioYEAR: 1957TAGS: el paso, white sport coat, autumn years, texas, marty robbins, pink carnations, ron cesekPUBLISHED: June 4, 2008I had just gotten my drivers license in 1957, I had turned sixteen in November and had most of the kinks out of my car a 1936 Ford Coupe street rod with a brand new thunderbird engine. Of course I had the white sport coat and the pink carnation on when I asked Mom if I could borrow her car. The battery died trying to start the '36,it was flooded. Mom had been watching me out the window and when I gave up and went back in the house she said that I really looked sharp. She said yes I can borrow her car and off I went. Mom had a 1952 Mercury Hardtop with a continental kit and fender skirts, tinted glass, spinner hubcaps, dual exhausts, "hollywood mufflers". . what a fine prom-mobile. I even had blue dot tailights on the Merc. Pauline, my date, was delighted that my '36 wouldn't start. She said that she couldn't imagine her prom dress in the front seat of my car. I would have had to take a whole lot of heat from the guys about my car not making it to the prom except that I told them I had my Mom's car because it has a back seat after all and my '36 don't . . the more I think about it in retrospect, I am glad the battery died. I have more about my buddy Marty Robbins way down in the west Texas town of El Paso later
