August 11th, 2007 is a day I'll always remember. It's the day that my grandmother died. As soon as my brother and I got the news we made the 2 hour drive from Gainesville back to our hometown of Fernandina Beach. I don't recall what we listened to on the way back, if anything at all, but there is always one song that will remind me of her now, When I Paint my Masterpiece. Later that month I started listening to The Band pretty heavily and I quickly recognized my favorite song by them. Before I sat down and listened to The Band, Up on Cripple Creek was always my favorite tune of theirs. After listening to the song When I Paint My Masterpiece I knew it had earned the top spot of Band songs for me and for one reason. My grandmother would always talk about how life was going to be grand once her ship rolled in, and I never knew what she was talking about. When I heard 'Masterpiece' I began to understand. "Someday everything is gonna sound like a Rhapsody, When I paint my masterpiece." Now I'm not a very religious man but after pondering this for quite some time I began to think of her little saying about a ship as a metaphor for her introduction to God. Now when I hear that song I think of her...my grams.
