My Brother's Sudden DeathLOCATION: Ride Home from Hospital , Daytona Beach, FLYEAR: 2002TAGS: drive, drunk, death, brother, memory, hospital, candlebox, behind, driving, family, tears, farPUBLISHED: April 29, 2008My older brother was killed by a drunk driver when I was 16. He had just turned 22.
We all expected him to recover because he was such a physically strong person. He worked out six days a week and ate healthy. He rarely got sick. So when the doctor came into the ICU and informed us that his brain stem collapsed and that there was nothing to be done, our hearts felt like collapsing.
I'll never forget the long ride home. We lived four hours away from the hospital. The first song that came onto the radio was "Far Behind." I had recently learned it on guitar. I wanted to show him and when I started singing and playing it, tears slowly streamed down his cheeks - it was the only time that I ever saw him cry and it was because of me. That moment has been etched into my brain. It's a memory that can never be recreated, but at least I have it forever.
I love this song.
