Slow Poke has been around as long as I can remember and the very title was probably derived from a term used for centuries to describe those of us who like to stop and “smell the roses”
The music is very upbeat and simplistic as are the words as the singer laments about their partner’s dawdling.  Having been on both sides I can relate fully to the dilemma.  When things need to be done in a hurry or you have other things to get done, waiting for someone else to move or appear can be frustrating to be sure, but in this age of instant everything I really feel a need to slowdown is essential.  Do we really know what we are rushing to or from?
This song has come to mind often over the years, especially when my son was young and would move at a snail’s pace to fulfill requests to clean his room or whatever.  However, it was only recently that it came to mind in relation to someone’s comments about me.  My husband was ready to leave the house and was waiting for me to “do one more thing first” when he sighed and commented that he had never seen anyone that could dawdle as much as I could.  I hurried to leave, but my mind went back to this song and I laughed.  Just a couple hours earlier I’d been walking with friends and one of them had commented on my speed with, “What’s your hurry?”  I guess Slow Poke is truly in the eyes of the beholder.
