The Nice Neighbors across The Street

In the summer of 1973 we moved into a nice, three-bedroom, ranch style home in a nice neighborhood of Madison Heights. Although we were only renting, we took great pride in finding such a nice place in what appeared to be a nice middle-class neighborhood. It didnt take long for us to meet many of our neighbors and most of them seemed to be nice. Before long, as friends and family came to visit, we discovered that the neighbors liked to party and drink-sometimes to excess. We were doing much the same thing at the time so it all seemed to work out nicely. It didnt take long for our home with its rec-room in the basement to become the favorite neighborhood gathering spot. That too suited us as we had two young children and in November of that year added another one to our family.
Shortly after that we began to notice the true character of our neighbors emerging. Most were little things that really had no bearing on us and so we ignored them. However, the family directly across the street was another story. The husband who had seemed nice enough to us in the beginning, although our dog never liked him, spent a lot more time than would be dictated by mere coincidence standing at his picture window staring across the street at our place. Since our picture window was directly in line with theirs it gave me the creepy feeling of being spied on to the point that I began keeping my front drapes closed if myself and the baby were the only ones home. His wife we discovered at about the same time was a vindictive alcoholic who was having trouble facing the fact that she was no longer a youngster. We found evidence of her vindictiveness in our downstairs pantry after a party where her obvious advances towards my brother-in-law had been rejected. She opened a new jar of food and put out a cigarette in it.
Less than a month later she accused me of flirting with her husband in front of everyone at a party at another neighbor's. First and foremost I wasnt doing so because he was more than twice my age, not very good looking, and he was asleep on the bar at the time. Besides my husband was right next to me, he was very handsome and I loved him deeply. Thats when this song started playing in my head over and over. My husband and I discussed it, but the economy was slowing and we really weren't in any position to make the move at that time. Within two weeks all that changed when my neighbor next door came over to tell me that this woman was telling all the ladies we knew that I was sleeping with their husbands and that she personally was going to make sure I didn't sleep with hers anymore. She also insinuated that my husband was ripe for an affair with her.
We moved from the nice neighborhood three days later.
