alynn | MEMORY FROM 1965

Silence, Please!

LOCATION: Michigan State University dorm , Michigan

YEAR: 1965

Tom Jones in his heyday was phenomenal and I loved his music.  He had a strong voice, great looks and sexy moves that would make Elvis blush.  As he gyrated in front of adoring fans each week on his TV show I was reminded that less than a decade earlier television refused to show Elvis from the waist down because of his moves.
However, this memory is about the one song I wish he had never recorded—What’s New Pussycat.  From the first time I heard it I hated it and would switch stations whenever it came on the radio.
Then I went to Michigan State University and it came time for Homecoming.  Instead of floats, each dorm built a stationary display in the same fashion as floats depicting their version of the general theme.  My room along with four other girls was on the first floor with windows facing the spot where our dorm’s display was erected.
Imagine a huge tiger with a moving tail.  Pretty neat?  I thought so until they put the finishing touch on it.  A recording of What’s New Pussycat was installed and it played continuously from 8am to 8pm every for two weeks.  Even with the windows closed you could hear it blaring away.
To this day even the mention of that song elicits groans from me and a warning to never play it when I’m with earshot.
