Seniority vs. Priority

“That old flame may not be stronger, but it’s been burning longer…”

The first time I heard this song I was transported back to a spring day in 1972.  At the time I’d been married for just over a year when an old flame appeared.  Our time together has been a roller coaster of emotions.  We parted for several reasons, not the least of which was his inability to make a total commitment to us.
But there he was, standing on the sidewalk just outside my backyard fence, declaring his love for me again along with outlining a carefully thought out plan for our future.  I couldn’t deny that despite everything I still had deep feelings for him.  However, I loved my husband more and would never even consider leaving him.  Once I made that very clear my old flame turned to leave then turned back.
“I hope he knows how lucky he is,” he said softly then smiling his best devilish enchanting smile added, “If he ever forgets remind him for me that he may have priority but I will always have seniority in your heart.”
Although I never told my late husband about the visit or the comment, it obviously stuck with me because it is my first thought anytime I hear this song even now
