A little over a year after my mother passed away I moved in with one of my sisters, Paula, and her husband, David.  It was quite an adjustment for all of us.  They’d only been married eighteen months when they were faced with a teenager in the house.  It was a bigger adjustment for David since he’d been raises around older people, except for his sister.  Just adapting to our large and youthful family had been a challenge.
My preference in music didn’t set well with him either.  To keep the peace and not cause problems for my sister, I confined my musical tastes to my room when he was around.  However, the time came when I wanted to buy my first album.  Since I didn’t frequent record stores my choices were limited to the offerings at the Kroger store where my sister shopped.  I made my choice long before I had enough extra cash to make the purchase so each week I would find the album and put it at the back of the rack so no one else would buy it first.  Silly I know, but it worked.  At last the day came and I eagerly made my purchase.  I couldn’t wait to get it home and with a little persuasion from my sister, I was allowed to play it on their stereo system downstairs.  It was Bobby Vee’s Hits and I believe the first song was indeed Rubber Ball.  To my surprise (and his, I’m sure) David enjoyed the entire album.  To me it was a generation breakthrough that aided me when I brought him my next album by Roy Orbison, unfortunately my third one didn’t fare as well.  David just never did get into Elvis.
