The year, 1973, that The Teddy Bear Song hit the airwaves was one of the best and worst in my life.  My marriage of two years had hit some rough spots, but we were back on track and doing well.  The two young children I had gained when I said I do were doing well and we seemed to be developing into a happy family.  With things going so well I was totally unprepared for what came next.
Years before I’d been told my chances of having a child of my own were one in a million and over the years I had come to accept that.  That’s why I was already four months along before a doctor gave me the news that I was pregnant.  I was thrilled, my husband was not.  Our other children were eight and ten—well on their way to being more self-reliant—and now we would be starting over.  He was not quite that delicate in stating his upset over the situation.  To say that it was not a happy time would be an understatement, though he did try to make-up for his initial reaction over the next few months I could see it was a less than enthusiastic try.  I totally related to the song as I was “wishing I hadn’t fallen in love with you”.  Then our son was born and I was in heaven.  Even my husband melted some when he held his new son, though it was years before he really learned to appreciate him fully.
In 2007 I had the privilege of seeing Barbara Fairfield’s show and meet her.  Along with her husband, Ray Morris, she is a fabulous entertainer and a truly remarkable individual.  I saw their show again in January of 2008.  It is ever changing, but always worth seeing.  Each time she sang The Teddy Bear Song it brought back memories of that year.  It is a year I wouldn’t want to go through again, yet a year I will always treasure for the special gift I received—my one in a million son.
