The Mamas and The Papas bring back lots of memories, but this song in particular connects to a six month period in 1970.  I had fallen for a guy totally opposite to the type I normally dated.  For most of my friend it was easy to see why—he was gorgeous.  Tall, dark, and handsome with dark eyes one could get lost in were the physical assets that caught my attention, but he was also witty and intelligent.
 For a short time it looked like this was relationship with a solid future.  Just when I was truly getting comfortable with it, he disappeared for about a week.  When he reappeared there was no apology or explanation.  Thinking he may have been feeling a bit overwhelmed by the intensity of our feelings so quickly I let it pass.
 Unfortunately it was the first, but not the last time he pulled this disappearing act.  Each time he reappeared it was the same—no apology and no explanation even though I asked.  His only comment was, “I just felt like getting away.”  In fact, he felt like getting away so often in the last couple months of our relationship that I finally had had enough.  When I could take it no longer, I told him if he disappeared again I wouldn’t be there when he returned.  He promised he wouldn’t, but he did. 

I left. 

I saw him once after that, but we never got back together and I never knew where he disappeared to when we were together.
