Like most people I can’t tell you the first time I heard Puff, The Magic Dragon.  It is a song that speaks to me even now and provides wonderful memories of my early childhood.
 Even though I have five siblings they are a great deal older than me so growing up I spent a great deal of  “play time” alone.  Computers, cell phones, other forms of “buddy closeness” hadn’t been invented—so like Jackie Paper I had an imaginary friend that was as devoted to me as I was to her.
 We did almost everything together.  Nothing was impossible and our adventures were grand flights of fancy.  Later in life some of those adventures found their way to paper in the form of short stories.
 Sadly though as time passed I grew-up and my world expanded to the point that I no longer sought this devoted friend.  Back then it didn’t occur to me that it would matter to my friend until as a young adult I heard this song again.
 In the song Puff fades always from sadness, but I know from experience that if Jackie ever needed him again, Puff would be there in a heartbeat.  How do I know?   I know because my friend returns when I call and together we do the impossible still.  We have weathered good times and bad almost as one.  I also know that as long as they are in our hearts and memories friends never really die, whether real or imagined
